From the first deaf basketball games on American soil to the international stage — the story of USA Deaf Basketball.
Organization History
The USA Deaf Basketball Story
Deaf Basketball Takes Root
Organized deaf basketball competition begins to take shape across the United States, with regional clubs and schools for the deaf fielding competitive teams. The foundation for a national program is laid through grassroots community organizing.
First National Representation
American deaf basketball players begin competing in international DIBF-sanctioned events, representing the United States informally through USADSF-affiliated programs. The need for a dedicated national basketball organization becomes clear.
Growing International Presence
US deaf basketball athletes achieve notable results at DIBF World Championships, raising the profile of the sport domestically and demonstrating the depth of talent within the American deaf basketball community.
Movement Toward a National Organization
Deaf basketball leaders, coaches, and athletes across the country begin organizing in earnest to establish a formal national governing body dedicated exclusively to deaf basketball — separate from multi-sport deaf sports organizations.
USA Deaf Basketball Incorporated
USA Deaf Basketball is formally incorporated as a nonprofit organization and applies for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status. The founding board of directors is elected and the organization begins building its national program infrastructure.
Official Program Launch
USA Deaf Basketball officially launches its national program with four national teams: Men's, Women's, U21 Men's, and U21 Women's. The organization commits to competing at the 2027 DIBF World Championships and the 2028 Deaflympics.
